Mass market green move from HC

HarperCollins is to print its entire mass market paperback list on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. HC's first green mass market paperback, The Loner by Josephine Cox, is published today. From October onwards all books on HC's paperback trade lists will be printed on FSC paper, which the publisher said means that almost 55% of its books will be on environmentally friendly paper.

HC has also formed a new partnership with the FSC to help raise consumer awareness of environmentally friendly paper, which will see a logo displayed prominently on the back cover of all HC's FSC certified titles.

Chief executive and publisher Victoria Barnsley said: "We carried out a survey earlier this year which revealed that 94% of UK book buyers worry about what’s happening to the environment, and 75% think more books should be printed on environmentally-friendly paper. We want to do everything we can to help inform consumers about the benefits of using FSC paper and to let them know that their choice can help the environment."

HC moved to green electricity made from 100% renewable sources in July this year. It also moved literary imprint Fourth Estate over to quality recycled paper made from 100% post-consumer waste in July. HC said it is still on track to be carbon neutral by the end of 2007.
