£52m for literacy skills

The Government announced today that it would be providing £52 million to fund the implementation of a raft of measures aimed at improving literacy and communications skills in children.

£40 million of this is to be used in support of the “Every Child a Talker” programme, helping teachers to identify children with problems.

The move follows a review of the speech, language and communication needs of 0-19 year olds by John Bercow MP, which was published on Wednesday. NLT Talk to your Baby campaign manager Liz Attenborough said: “The Bercow Review recognises that literacy is a key life skill for every child, and will impact on their potential to achieve at school, make friends and be successful in later life.”

The NLT will provide a written response to the Bercow report at the end of July.
