Record numbers at Hong Kong fair
A record 829,967 visitors attended this year's book fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, an increase of 8.7 percent on last year's 760,000, reports Hong Kong's The Standard newspaper.
Hong Kong Trade Development Council assistant executive director Raymond Yip Chak-yan said, despite the huge turnout, organisers were happy with crowd control measures at the seven-day show that ended yesterday.
Looking ahead, Yip said there may be larger stall areas next year when the Asian Link Extension project is completed. Overall, hall areas will be increased by 40%.
According to Yip, the fair is aimed at enhancing cultural awareness among the general population. On growing fears of the fair's commercialisation, Yip said culture should be diverse.
