Lulu joins forces with weRead
06.08.08 Anna Richardson
Self publishing website Lulu has struck a deal with social networking company weRead. WeRead has more than two million registered members through social networking sites such as Facebook, MyStace and Bebo, and members have written more than 1.5 million book reviews.
President and c.o.o. of Lulu Enterprises, Bryce Boothby, said that the deal would provide "a better way of matching writers and readers".
"It clearly changes the game in publishing by bringing together traditional and self-published works in one marketplace," he added.
The agreement would combine Lulu.com's free self-pulishing tools and distributions capabilities with weRead's independent ratings and reviews and readership communities on social networks.
WeRead founders founders Krishna Motukuri and Harish Abbott will divide their time between Lulu's US offices and weRead's center of operations in Bangalore, India.
Motukuri said: "The Lulu/weRead combination is the first step toward the democratisation of the book," said Motukuri. "Anyone should be able to write a book and let the marketplace rate it fairly in a way that people can trust."
