HarperCollins is to publish a teen novel about “Sex and the City” heroine Carrie Bradshaw from author Candace Bushnell. HC has bought world rights to The Carrie Diaries, which will take readers back to Carrie’s formative years in high school, including her friendships, romances and plans to become a writer. It will be Bushnell's first novel for teenagers.
Alessandra Balzer, co-publisher of the Balzer & Bray imprint at HarperCollins Children's in the US, did a two-book deal with Heather Schroder at ICM, with The Carrie Diaries scheduled for global publication in autumn 2010.
Bushnell said: "I've always been interested in exploring Carrie's teenage years. Carrie in high school did not follow the crowd - she led it. It was there that she began observing and commenting on the social scene."
Balzer said teenagers were "rabid fans" of the "Sex and the City" book, HBO TV show, and film. Ann-Janine Murtagh, fiction and picture book publisher at HC Children’s Books in the UK, commented: "I am absolutely delighted to be publishing these two fabulous titles in the UK where Carrie Bradshaw has such a loyal following already. I am sure that Candace will offer us an irresistible insight into Carrie Bradshaw’s early hopes and dreams and create stories which are sure to have universal appeal."
