Dutch e-reader developer Irex has unveiled a new digital reader, which it boasts will spell "the end of the printed word for business professionals" and help the environment by reducing paper copying.

The iRex 1000 series comes with a larger display size and increased memory, and according to Hans Brons, chief executive of iRex, is aimed at professionals such as "tax specialists, accountants and lawyers that previously had thick piles of documents".

The iRex 1000 series has a 10.2 inch screen size two inches bigger than the iLiad, and weighs less than 570 grams. The larger display has 16 grey tones and a 1GB memory card. A later, third, version of the device will also offer Wi-Fi access.

According to the Irex website the two versions of its new device will retail at about €499. The first version is on sale now via the iRex website, but is not yet available via a third-party in the UK.

"The success of digital reading has been focused on and measured by its impact upon the book market when in fact the real revolution is happening in the business world," Brons added. “The computer revolutionised the way we do business, but it has never offered a solution to match paper."

Bron said that the series would offer a way for companies and individuals to cut out the billions of pages of printed paper they produce each year, making a powerful contribution to the environment.
