Children’s author David Almond is adapting his novel The Savage (Walker Books) into a stage play for Newcastle’s Live Theatre.
The story is about a 10-year-old boy called Blue who, when he loses his father, decides to start a story about a wild boy called ‘the savage’. Described as part novel and part graphic novel, the book was first published with illustrations by Dave McKean in 2008.
Almond said it was a “real thrill” to adapt the story for stage. “Tyneside is my literary heartland. It's where my stories, my dreams and my language come from, and it's where the strange, scary, tender savage was born."
The director is Max Roberts and the designer is Alison Ashton. It will feature original music by Beth Brennan and run from 30th June – 23rd July.
