Little, Brown imprint Corsair has acquired Difficult Women, a collection of short stories by US writer Roxane Gay, for publication in January 2017.
Difficult Women is the first new book from Roxane Gay since her novel An Untamed State and essay collection Bad Feminist.
Gay’s "highly anticipated" memoir Hunger (also Corsair) is scheduled for later in 2017.
Difficult Women is described as "a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection".
Commissioning editor Sarah Castleton acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Rachel Clements at Abner Stein acting on behalf of primary agent Maria Massie at Lippincott Massie McQuilkin.
Gay was recently awarded the prestigious 2015 PEN Center USA Freedom to Write Award. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Time, the Los Angeles Times and the Guardian, among others. She is also currently co-writer on the new Black Panther comics series for Marvel, working alongside Ta-Nehisi Coates.
An Untamed State is currently being adapted for film for Fox Searchlight, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
