Steve Smith, the former president and c.e.o. of John Wiley, has died at the age of 61.
Smith, who had been suffering from cancer, passed away on Sunday 10th July.
Smith joined Wiley in 1992 as vice president for Wiley Asia, based in Singapore, and was made president and c.e.o. in May 2011. He took early retirement in June of last year to focus on his health.
Before joining Wiley, Smith was president of Simon & Schuster's UK Academic and Professional group.
Current Wiley president and c.e.o. Mark Allin said: “Steve fought bravely against cancer, never allowing the disease to dampen his natural spirit, energy and vitality. Steve was diagnosed at the very beginning of his tenure as c.e.o. but worked with passion and commitment to make Wiley stronger for the future. He was a mentor to many of us, a leader for all of us and an inspiration to each of us”.
Steve is survived by his wife Liz and his five children. Donations in his memory may be made to The Urology Foundation.
