Faber has acquired a non-fiction title by novelist Rachel Cusk, about contemporary mid-life femininity.
Publishing director Hannah Griffiths bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Tracy Bohan at the Wylie Agency. The book, Aftermath, will use elements of the author's own life to give a structure as the book looks at areas such as marriage, separation, gender, domesticity, motherhood, money and work. Faber plans to publish in March 2012.
Griffiths said: "I read Rachel's stunning Granta piece in the F Word issue (published this month). It felt like the first chapter of a book I'd love to read. I'm sure many readers turned to Rachel's book on motherhood, A Life's Work, as I did, as an antidote to the slew of pastel-coloured publishing one gets exposed to in pregnancy.
"Aftermath is a kind of deferred sequel, a personal/political book that looks at a woman's life after the defining experiences of femininity have passed, when one has to define oneself all over again."
Cusk has written six novels, as well as A Life's Work and her memoir The Last Supper, which was published in 2009.
