An originally self-published book, The Little Book of Big Weightloss by Bernadette Fisers, has been snapped up by Transworld UK and Penguin Australia after a three-way auction brokered by Zoë King at The Blair Partnership. The book racked up seven deals in less than a week over London Book Fair in what The Blair Partnership is calling "a global frenzy".
A wave of pre-empts took place for the book at LBF with a number of international deals agreed during the fair. Rights have now been sold to publish in France (Marabout, Hachette Livre); Norway (Gyldendal); Finland (Otava); Greece (Psichogios); Estonia (Varrak); Denmark (Gyldendal); and Turkey (Dogan Kitap).
US rights are out on submission and new interest and offers are said to be coming in daily.
Jessica Maslen, head of International Publishing at The Blair Partnership, said the book was "like no other" in the space and filling a gap in the market. The quick-to-read guide to "radical and sustainable" weight loss is said to be both fun and no-nonsense in its approach "for anyone sick and tired of diet failure and confused by conflicting diet advice and complicated regimens". It is based on a set of 31 food and lifestyle "rules".
Maslen commented: "We’re thrilled with the huge level of enthusiasm this title has received internationally. Bern’s Little Book of Big Weightloss is filling a gap in the market. It has seduced publishers worldwide through its fun, simple, no-nonsense approach and graphic design. It’s a useful and hugely enjoyable read like no other in its category!"
