HarperCollins Children’s Books has acquired a four-book fiction series about pirates by Amy Sparkes and Ben Cort.
Harriet Wilson, senior editorial director of fiction at HarperCollins Children’s Books, secured the series via Julia Churchill at A. M. Heath in a pre-emptive deal for world rights.
The Pirate Blunderbeard series is aimed at children aged five to eight and the first book, Pirate Blunderbeard – Worst. Pirate. Ever., is about a terrible pirate who competes nevertheless for the ‘Pirate of the Year’ award. It will be released in paperback, e-book and audiobook in June.
“Pirate Blunderbeard is pure publishing gold,” said Wilson. “Amy’s hilarious story blows all others out of the water. She has five young children and her insider knowledge is evident in her perfectly-pitched, giggle- inducing text. And tempting Ben Cort on board is a real coup. He’s recognised and loved by young readers and retailers alike and is a brilliant asset to the series. We can’t wait to launch our flagship series and sail it to success.”
