HarperVoyager has released an enhanced edition of the first book in George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, which will include an excerpt from the upcoming sixth book, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the title.
A Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition will give fans the "ultimate reading experience" and will incorporate a "world of additional content that enriches and enlivens" the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, the publisher has said.
The edition includes interactive character maps, detailed annotations, character journeys and timelines, family trees and histories, house and sigil summaries and "stunning" illustrations. It will also feature a "gorgeous new cover", an extensive glossary of important terms and audio clips narrated by actor Roy Dotrice.
Enhanced editions of books two through to five will follow in the coming months, the publisher has said.
“We’re now entering a new period in the history of publishing,” said Martin. “The digital book gives readers the ability to experience all this rich secondary material that had not been possible before. These enhanced editions available only on iBooks include sigils and family trees and glossaries. Anything that confuses you, anything you want to know more about, it’s right there at your fingertips. It’s an amazing next step in the world of books.”
A Game of Thrones: Enhanced Edition is now available exclusively on iBooks, priced £6.00.
The edition will include an except from the "highly anticipated" sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter. Earlier this month HarperCollins confirmed that "nothing has been finalised regarding the publication or the date" of the sixth book, after reports surfaced that it would be published in March next year.
In January, Martin announced that The Winds of Winter is "months away" from completion. It was originally due to be published in March 2016 to coincide with the sixth series of the TV show. In a blog post, Martin said he was "still working" on the book and had "no announcement to make on that front".
In a further move to mark the 20th anniversary of A Game of Thrones, HarperCollins is to publish an illustrated edition of the title on 18th October 2016.
