Hermione Granger has beaten Harry Potter to the number one spot for the public’s favourite character from the Harry Potter novels, with Severus Snape coming in second. The boy wizard himself only managed sixth place in the poll, conducted by National Book Tokens. A separate survey to mark 20 years since the first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Bloomsbury) was released, found that the public figure most likely to be in the Slytherin house at Hogwarts is Donald Trump.
Hermione won 15% of the 10,000 votes cast in the National Book Tokens survey. The polls opened on 5th June and the results were revealed today (26th June).
Snape took second place followed by Luna Lovegood in third. Harry took the sixth spot, while Ron Weasley took seventh place. House elf Dobby made the top 10 at number five, with Sirius Black, Albus Dumbledore, Remus Lupin and Minvera McGonagall completing the top tranche.
Voters could also suggest their own favourite characters outside of the 20 most featured, and of these Molly Weasley (Ron’s mother) received the most votes. Some characters only received single votes including Pomona Sprout, Moaning Myrtle and Neville Longbottom’s toad Trevor.
Political polling company YouGov also released a Harry Potter-themed survey today, revealing that "most Britons [54%] should be in the Hufflepuff" House. It also confirmed that Hermione Granger was Britain's favourite Harry Potter character, and said that Trump is the public figure most likely to be in the Slytherin House, according to Harry Potter fans. The US president won 69% of votes for the accolate, beating off fierce competition from Piers Morgan (64%), Simon Cowell (58%), Theresa May (55%) and Kim Kardashian (37%) out of a poll of more than 1,000 Harry Potter fans.
