Hot Key Books has acquired a new book trilogy, The Folk of the Air, from bestselling teen and children’s author, Holly Black.
Black is known for the Modern Faerie Tale series, as well as for co-authoring The Spiderwick Chronicles and Magisterium.
Black said that the trilogy will “delve deeper into the strange, glittering, malicious courts of the faeries.”
The trilogy will follow a young human girl who witnesses the deaths of her parents before being forcibly taken to another world of which she will one day fight to gain power. The first book will be The Cruel Prince.
Black said: “I am so excited to be working with Emma Matthewson and Hot Key Books on my new series. I love their list and am thrilled to have The Cruel Prince published alongside works of Gath Nix, Sally Gardner, and Maureen Johnson.”
Editor at large, Emma Matthewson, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights including audio for The Folk of the Air trilogy plus additional rights for an e-book novella from Heather Baror-Shapiro at Baror International.
Matthewson said: “I see so much fantasy on submission, and it is only a select few that really get my antennae tingling. And Holly’s The Folk of the Air series did this for me: the richly visualised faerie world, the complex plotting and the intriguing relationships make for a sizzling read – we cannot wait to publish!”
This first book, The Cruel Prince, from the trilogy will be published in 2018.
