Scottish poet and essayist Kathleen Jamie is to receive the 2017 Royal Geographical Society’s Ness Award for "outstanding creative writing at the confluence of travel, nature and culture".
The awards are presented annually in recognition of those who have made outstanding achievements.
Previous winners of the prize include Robert Macfarlane, Nicholas Crane, Colin Thubron, Michael Palin, Andrea Wulf, Nick Danziger and Ray Mears.
Jamie said: “I'm delighted to have been offered this award. It was a real surprise and the citation – for writing at 'the confluence of travel, nature and culture – pleased me greatly. I've never been quite sure what my work is about, but this is a description I can recognise with pride.”
Jamie is the author of Findings (Sort of Books), Sightlines (Sort of Books), The Bonniest Companie (Picador) and The Overhaul (Picador), among other works.
Presentation of the Royal Medals and other Awards of the Society will take place during the Society's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 5th June 2017, at the Society in central London, presented by the Society’s president, Nicholas Crane.
