Television rights to Tom Marcus’ memoir Soldier Spy have been sold to Kudos, producers of "Broadchurch", "Spooks" and "Humans", who are planning a returnable series.
The deal was brokered by Emily Hayward Whitlock at the Artists Partnership in association with Luigi Bonomi at LBA Books Limited and Sue Swift at Kudos. Soldier Spy was published by Michael Joseph in October and is about the personal struggles of an MI5 surveillance officer.
Kudos executive producer Phil Temple and head of literary acquisitions Sue Swift said: "Soldier Spy is one of the most compelling and provocative spy books the team here at Kudos has read in a long time. The undercover work Tom Marcus does to keep our streets safe from violence is real, and it’s happening now. His down and dirty insider account of his time as a working-class surveillance officer in the Secret Service is the antithesis of the classic spy story. It’s surprising and emotional as well, which is why it will make a fantastic and unexpected TV series."
Marcus said: "Kudos is the perfect fit to put Soldier Spy with, I’m incredibly excited and grateful to be working with such a forward thinking company. It really is going to be something very special."
