Ellie Levenson, the author of The Noughtie Girl’s Guide to Feminism (Oneworld), has set up a new venture that will begin publishing children’s picture books next year.
Fisherton Press, which has the strapline "books for children that adults also like reading" has so far commissioned six books from illustrators and first-time children’s authors. The first books will hit shelves in September 2014.
Levenson was motivated to move into the business after developing some children’s book ideas with Templar that did not make it to publication.
“The experience convinced me that this was an industry I wanted to work in, and that I wanted to be a small independent because I found the slow speed that big publishing houses work at a bit frustrating as I am used to the fast turnaround of copy that you get as a journalist,” she told The Bookseller.
The venture is named after Levenson’s grandmother and the Fishertons had a printers in the East End of London, she said.
Levenson has so far raised £2,027 through Kickstarter for Democracy for Toddlers, a picture book explaining democratic elections to pre-schoolers.
Fisherton Press has a website, www.fishertonpress.co.uk, which is currently under construction, as well as a Facebook page. Ellie can be found on Twitter @EllieLevenson.
