Mulholland UK is publishing Caleb Carr’s debut, The Alienist, and Angel of Darkness for the first time in e-book, as well as three new books by Carr.
The Alienist was translated into over two dozen languages and sold millions worldwide, according to Mulholand who described it "a true phenomenon". Sales largely pre-date Nielsen Bookscan, through which it has sold 2,715 copies in the UK since 2011.
The multi-book deal was struck between Ruth Tross, who acquired UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada, and Matilda Forbes Watson at WME on behalf of Suzanne Gluck.
The deal includes Surrender, which will publish in 2018, and two new Alienist novels, The Alienist at Armageddon and The Strange Case of Miss Sara X, the first of which is out in 2019. The new Alienist novels will also be published by Mulholland US, with translation rights available through Tracy Fisher at WME.
A TV adaptation of the series is in pre-production and will be executive produced and directed by BAFTA nominated director Jakob Verbruggen ("Black Mirror", "House of Cards" and "The Fall").
The Alienist and The Angel of Darkness will be out in e-book in July 2017.
Tross said: "I remember the huge impact of The Alienist in the 90s, and am delighted to have the chance to give it a new life in e-book. And like many, many fans worldwide, I am eagerly awaiting the next instalment of this thrilling and influential series."
