Readers have donated £40,000 to charity to help refugees, with authors Patrick Ness, John Green, Derek Landy and Jojo Moyes donating a further £40,000.
Ness launched a fundraising page this morning (Thursday) for Save the Children, with money going to help the charity’s work during the refugee crisis. Ness said he would match £10,000 of donations made by the public, with the target reached in less than four hours.
After donations kept pouring in Green matched the second £10,000, with Landy matching the third £10,000 and Moyes the next.
Ness told The Bookseller: “I feel like I have to do something. If we can all give money, it is something, however small.”
By 5pm, more than £80,000 had been raised, including the author’s pledges, with the page still taking donations.
