Ebury Press is branching out into the New Adult market with commercial fiction director Gillian Green acquiring multiple novels by two previously self-published authors.
Green bought British Commonwealth rights in three novels by Cora Carmack, including Losing It, now published by HarperCollins US after an initial self-publication. Green said: "Losing It is the perfect antidote to Fifty Shades of Grey. It's a novel about a young student wanting to lose her virginity by more conventional means than a kinky contract. It's a funny, charming love story which will appeal to female readers of all ages."
Meanwhile Green acquired all rights in three novels by Brazilian author Lilian Carmine, who posted her first novel The Lost Boys on Wattpad and achieved 32m reads. The Lost Boys series is described as a supernatural romance series about a teenage girl who falls in love with a ghost but with sexual content that wouldn't go in a purely YA novel. Brazilian rights have already been pre-empted by Leya. Green said: "The obvious comparisons are to the Twilight saga but Lilian's writing is sweet and romantic and has a charm all of its own."
The Lost Boys will be published as a b-format original in August 2013, priced £6.99, with Losing It and Faking It coming also in £6.99 b-format editions in June and September 2013 respectively.
The "new adult" genre comprises hot romances set at college or university and with a readership that crosses from YA into an older age bracket.
