Nottingham-based theatre company New Perspectives will be adapting Chigozie Obioma's Man Booker-shortlisted novel The Fishermen (Pushkin) for stage next year.
The Fishermen was published by the ONE imprint of Pushkin Press in 2015 and was the only debut novel shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2015.
Jack McNamara, artistic director of New Perspectives, said: "As soon as I read the opening chapters of Chigozie Obioma's stunning novel The Fishermen I began to see it onstage. In addition to the Macbeth-like prophecy that sets the main action in motion, the novel evokes a strong dramatic dynamic between its main characters and evokes such a powerful sense of place. Like the best of theatre it is both expansive and intimate, looking at big themes through a narrow lens. The staging possibilities it raises are infinite and I am thrilled and honoured to be staging it in 2018."
New Perspectives has also adapted work by Saul Bellow, Daphne Du Maurier, Ted Hughes, and Aki Kaurismaki.
