The award is for the best crime novel by a first-time author of any nationality first published in the UK in English.
The shortlisted titles are Fever City by Tim Baker (Faber), a multi-stranded examination of the JFK assassination, Dodgers by Bill Beverly (No Exit Press), a "modern and deadly" road journey from the ghettos of Los Angeles to the heart of the US Midwest, Freedom’s Child by Jax Miller (HarperCollins), a "fascinating" tale of revenge and redemption, The Good Liar by Nicholas Searle (Viking), a "fiendishly-plotted" urbane thriller, and Eileen by Ottessa Moshfergh (Jonathan Cape), a "sober" and "gritty" tale of a woman "lost inside her demons".
