Headline Review has acquired an "enchanting" new novel The Songs of Us by Emma Cooper.
Fiction publishing director Jennifer Doyle acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to the book from Amanda Preston at LBA Books. Translation rights have already been snapped up in six countries - Germany (Goldmann Verlag), Italy (Garzanti), France (Mazarine), Brazil (Record), Spain (Lince /Malpaso) and Turkey (Pena) in pre-empts and multiple auctions - via ILA (Intercontinental Literary Agency Ltd).
Doyle called the book "heartbreaking" but ultimately "uplifting". In The Songs of Us, Melody King is suffering from a condition which means she sings when she’s anxious. Her teenage children Rose and Flynn love her just as she is, however, and the missing person report that sparks a journey to find her missing husband and their father brings them together in ways they never could have imagined.
Headline Review will publish in e-book in summer 2018 followed by a paperback in September.
Doyle said: "I immediately fell in love with the voice of Melody King in The Songs of Us, as I laughed and cried my way through this heart-breaking but ultimately hugely uplifting novel about love, loss and what it means to be a family. Just like Emma, this novel is warm, funny and relatable and I know it’s one that many people will really take into their hearts."
