The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings will become a Virago Modern Classic in September 2016.
The novel includes a foreword by children's author and fan of the work, Michael Morpurgo.
Editorial director Donna Coonan acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Julia Churchill at A. M. Heath, working on behalf of Marianne Merola at Brandt and Hochman.
Coonan said: "I am thrilled to add this beautiful novel, which won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize, to our expanding range of books for younger readers. This moving American coming-of-age story, in the vein of Steinbeck’s The Red Pony, has long been out of print and really is a lost gem."
Morpurgo said: "At its heart is a touching and telling story of a child's love for a fellow sentient creature. There is sentiment, that's for sure, but harshness too. An iconic story of growing up, of confronting loss and grief. A marvellous book that deserves a revival, deserves to escape from the shadow of the film. Never judge a book by its film!"
