Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper: Volume One (Hodder Children’s) pulsed into the Children’s number one, as its adaptation dropped on Netflix. The graphic novel jumped 65% week on week in volume, and was closely followed by its three sequels, all of which surged into the kids’ top 20. While YA book blockbusters Karen McManus’ One of Us is Lying (Penguin) and Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone series (Orion) have been adapted by the streaming service in the past year, neither was boosted quite so far up the chart as Heartstopper: Volume One, which becomes the first YA book in the Children’s top spot since February (and only the fourth in the past year).
Post-Easter, the seasonal picture books rolled right out of the kids’ charts, with Australian cartoon dog Bluey’s The Pool (Ladybird) making a splash in the Pre-school top spot.
Hannah Gold and Levi Pinfold’s Waterstones Children’s Book Prize winner The Last Bear (HarperCollins) snowballed back into the overall kids’ runner-up spot, as TikTok-boosted YA made a strong showing. Holly Jackson’s YA noir A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Good Girl, Bad Blood (both Electric Monkey) charted in the Children’s & YA Fiction top 20, with Adam Silvera’s They Both Die at the End (S&S), Kathleen Glasgow’s Girl in Pieces (Oneworld) and McManus’ One of Us is Lying and You’ll Be the Death of Me (both Penguin) also rising.
