Sarah Pearse’s The Sanatorium was the highest new Adult Fiction entry in the Top 50, hitting 19th place. Paperback fiction tends to make a big return to the charts in January following a quieter autumn, yet it seemed to be TikTok driving the trends rather than the traditional Richard and Judy Book Club boost. Colleen Hoover’s 2021 Top 50 staple It Ends with Us topped off the year in style by rocketing 27 places up the chart to swipe fourth place, as Ugly Love entered in 22nd place. Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis, Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles climbed up the Mass Market Fiction top 20.

Richard Osman’s The Man Who Died Twice notched up a 14th week as the Original Fiction number one, as its series predecessor The Thursday Murder Club scored a 31st in the Mass Market Fiction top spot.
