What can you tell us about Second Life?
Second Life is a psychological thriller. The main character is called Julia, and the book opens with the death of someone very close to her. A search for the truth about what really happened leads Julia to some dark places. In Second Life I'm interested again in identity, the masks we wear in different situations, the truths we hide and reveal both online and in person, how we place ourselves vulnerable to danger.
What do you think of the new cover? Were you involved at all?
I love it! Even though it's quite abstract I think it fits the book perfectly. I wasn't really involved - I think it best if I leave it to the experts!
What was it like having a debut that was so successful? Did you feel any pressure with Second Life?
It was amazing to see the way Before I Go to Sleep connected with readers around the world, an absolute dream come true. To have my work read and enjoyed is so wonderful, and I can't really ask for more than that. Of course that means that there's some pressure with Second Life - but I've taken my time and written a book that I love, and that I'd want to read. That's all I can do, really!
What was the experience of having your book turned into such a high profile film?
Another dream come true! I never thought it would happen, and I had to pinch myself regularly. It was particularly surreal to wander round the set and to watch Oscar winning actors play characters I'd invented, and of course it's wonderful to see Before I Go to Sleep have a second life of its own...
Finally, if you had to pitch Second Life in a sentence to potential readers what would you say?
It's me, only more so, and if you liked Before I Go to Sleep you won't be disappointed...
