Britain is unique in not only the number of premier league writers it has produced, but in the volume of tourist attractions and other significant places with literary connections. In my new book Treasured Island, inspired by a cherished family copy of the book, I set off on a literary odyssey of the UK exploring our national literary heritage, enjoying many of its stranger outposts. The list runs from the weirdly unsophisticated to the ultra lavish: Sir Walter Scott’s home Abbotsford is an extraordinarily elaborate tribute to a writer who is also handsomely commemorated by the world’s largest memorial to a writer (the Scott monument in Edinburgh) and a railway station (Waverly, also in Edinburgh, named after a Scott book). If you feel like following in my footsteps, this books should inspire a little literary wanderlust.
Treasured Island by Frank Barrett is out now (AA Publishing, £16.99).
