For the past seven decades our understanding of the Second World War has relied on conventional wisdom, propaganda and an interpretation skewed by the information available. The War in the West is the first of a new three-volume history in which I am challenging many entrenched assumptions about the war, many of which are based on truth by common knowledge rather than through detailed and painstaking research. Woven into the narrative are the experiences of dozens of individuals, from civilians and soldiers, to sailors, pilots, leading military strategists, industrialists and heads of state.
