Kristen Vida Alfaro has been appointed the sole publisher and managing director of Tilted Axis Press as Deborah Smith steps back.
Alfaro joined the press in July 2021 after working in research and evaluation at the Barbican Centre. Over the past year, she led Tilted Axis through a period of major change and growth, including its first Republic of Consciousness and International Booker Prize wins.
“It’s an absolute honour and privilege to move into this role at Tilted Axis Press," she said. "Deborah Smith, Sarah Shin and Simon Collinson created a press that has consistently challenged the UK publishing industry. This has been reflected in the literature we publish and the languages and translators we work with. As we grow, so will our ability to create ethical working conditions for authors, translators and publishers. It’s exciting to work with our team and the wider community to imagine and implement better working conditions alongside publishing innovative literature in translation.”
Smith added: “For a few years now I have been looking for the opportunity to step away responsibly from Tilted Axis, the press I founded in 2015 with Sarah Shin and Simon Collinson. Kristen Vida Alfaro, who has been managing the press since September 2021, is TAP’s director and publisher going forward and has full decision-making agency. She has demonstrated truly incredible passion, care and dedication since joining, seeing us through the whirlwind around Tomb of Sand’s International Booker win. I look forward to seeing where her vision takes the press."
