Former PRH senior editor Ana Fletcher has launched Unfolding Edits, a new training and editing consultancy that aims to "demystify the art of editing" for the publishing industry.
Fletcher established Unfolding Edits to expand the industry’s approach to editorial training and development, by offering editorial training workshops and manuscript editing to publishers and literary agencies.
Through two workshops, comprising "How to Edit Fiction" and "How to Edit Non-Fiction", Fletcher aims to give participants a framework for editing. The consultancy also works with publishers and agencies to design tailored editorial training, and consults on editorial development strategy for new joiners and junior members of staff.
At Unfolding Edits, Fletcher also edits fiction and non-fiction titles for publishers and literary agencies, and invites her clients to use those edits as training tools for their junior members of staff. She said: "Like many of my peers, I was fortunate to get excellent training in copy-editing and proofreading early on in my career.
"But the type of editing I found myself doing day to day as an in-house editor looked very different. It involved talking about the ideas at the heart of a project, grappling with a book’s shape and structure, and helping authors find their voice on the page."
Fletcher explained that after leaving Jonathan Cape in 2021, she developed the training programme, which involves guidance on structural edits, line editing, editing block, working with authors and more.
"I’m grateful to PRH for enthusiastically taking me up on the idea of running pilot sessions and supporting this work ever since, and to Canongate and Pan Macmillan for seeing the potential of the training early on," she added.
