Andrew Johnston has joined the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) as its latest patron.
The co-founder of Quiller Publishing, which was sold to Amberley Publishing earlier this year, Johnston has also worked for Foyles, Hutchinson and Penguin. He is a long-term champion of the IPG, and has served on the board for many years, including as its chair from 2009 to 2011.
The IPG’s patrons are people whose companies are, or have been, members of the IPG, and who wish to remain involved with the guild and independent publishing in an individual capacity. They are lifetime members, and the donations they provide are ring-fenced for special IPG projects or purchases. In recent years, patrons’ contributions have facilitated the launch of the IPG Skills Hub, a free professional development resource for members, as well as training grants.
Commenting on Johnston's appointment, IPG c.e.o. Bridget Shine said: “I am delighted that Andrew has agreed to become an IPG patron. He was an outstanding independent publisher for two decades, and as with many IPG members, his business flourished in niches of the market that he made his own. He has been an exceptionally generous supporter of our sector and the specialist publishers within it, and was a dependable chair during years of rapid change for the IPG. I am very pleased that he will continue to have an association with us.”
Johnston added: “I am both honoured and delighted to have become an IPG patron and to have the opportunity to continue my close involvement with the guild. One of my first acts after establishing Quiller Publishing was to join the IPG and it has been there as a supportive rock right throughout the last 20 years, and indeed was an important element leading to the acquisition of my publishing company. I will be forever grateful and look forward to assisting, alongside my fellow patrons, into the future.”
