Andrew Nurnberg Associates International Ltd (ANAI) has launched an Italian subsidiary, Andrew Nurnberg Associates International Milan, Srl (ANA Milan) promoting Barbara Barbieri as its director. The agency said it was important to strengthen its “connection to the continent after Brexit” and is part of its “deep commitment to Europe”.
Barbieri sets up office in her hometown of Milan after more than a decade at ANA London where she represented the agency’s Italian fiction authors; worked as senior agent primarily for the Italian market and became a founding member of FILL, the capital’s festival of Italian Literature. Prior to joining Nurnberg she studied Contemporary Italian Literature and worked at Book Aid International, Rizzoli and Atlantyca.
“ANA Milan will be the first office opened by an international literary agency in Italy,” said Barbieri. “For the agency, and our authors, it was important to strengthen our connection to the continent after Brexit. It has been a privilege to develop my agenting career alongside a legend like Andrew. I am thrilled both to be bringing home the expertise and ethics that I learned at ANA London and to work even closer to the Italian market finding the perfect homes for the wonderful authors and clients we represent.”
Doug Wallace, managing director, ANAI, added: “ANAI is known for the quality of its co-agenting, our local expertise and the breadth of our network around the world. We’re investing in Italy, and more broadly in Europe, as we did recently in Asia with our Hanoi and Bangkok office openings. ANA Milan is part of our deep commitment to Europe, to international rights selling and non-Anglophone writing and cultures. Barbara’s reputation is built on her tenacious dealmaking and her passion for rights. We’re delighted to see our longstanding colleague lead our Milan office and her colleagues in London and around the world wish her every success.”
ANA Milan will continue to work with ANA London’s core team for client accounting and contracts in addition to continued support from Benedetta Ciavarro, as part of the agency’s translation team, led by Sabine Pfannenstiel, which handles the German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Scandinavian markets from London.
ANA Milan is the agency’s 12th office outside London with ANA Kyiv, ANA Bangkok and ANA Hanoi joining ANA Prague, ANA Sofia, ANA Budapest, ANA Moscow, AnatoliaLit, ANA Warsaw, ANA Beijing and ANA Taipei in 2023.
