Penguin General has announced a restructure of the senior Communications team, with Anna Ridley promoted into the newly created role of divisional communications director, overseeing both marketing and publicity, effective immediately. She will be responsible for setting an “audience-facing vision” and strategy for the department, and leading an “integrated campaigns team”.
The news comes after it was announced that Amelia Fairney will take redundancy after 27 years at Penguin General, starting a new role at a social enterprise in February 2025.
“Anna is an exceptional communications professional: an especially strong strategist, problem-solver and crisis manager, admired and respected by her peers and authors alike,” said Preena Gadher, managing director of Penguin General. “In this brand new role, Anna will lead our communications department to deliver integrated campaigns, knitting together the disciplines of marketing and publicity, in line with an evolving consumer-awareness landscape.”
Moreover, Rose Poole has been promoted into the new role of campaigns director (marketing), while Julia Murday has been promoted into the newly created position of campaigns director (publicity). They will manage campaign creation and execution, as well as the performance and wellbeing of staff.
“Since returning from Vintage as acting marketing director at the start of the year with a raft of new skills, Rose has impressed with her creative campaign creation and delivery, her people management skills as well as how she has overseen the marketing launch of We Solve Murders by Richard Osman this year,” Gadher commented.
“She has developed as a manager and a leader, and I’m delighted she will take up this new role.”
The managing director added: “Julia has demonstrated an impressive ability to work in partnership with editorial, ensuring positioning is spot on from the beginning, in addition to thoughtful and imaginative campaign delivery. She has also been a skilled team manager, all of which will stand her in good stead in this new role. Julia will return from parental leave in the Spring.”
Ridley said: “While I’m sad to see the departure of my wise and inspiring colleague and friend Amelia Fairney, I’m pleased to move into this new role, and to work even more closely with Rose and Julia as we move into this new phase. Our distinctive approach at Penguin General sees communications at the heart of each book’s publication journey, and enables us to produce creative campaigns that deliver real impact.”
