Will Atkinson is to step down as managing director and publisher of Atlantic Books later this year.
He said: "After nearly nine of the most enjoyable years, it is time for me to hand over the leadership of this wonderful publishing company to someone new. Atlantic has great shareholders, and in our recent discussions of long-term strategy, there were different views on the next steps for the company, so it makes sense for someone else to come in and take Atlantic into the future, and for me to find a new challenge.
“I have loved every minute of my time here because Atlantic is a special place. My colleagues are remarkably talented and committed, and our days together in the office are fun with serious intent. I will miss them enormously along with our authors, who are the lifeblood and the reason for the endeavour.”
Atkinson will continue at the publisher until a successor is appointed.
He thanked chairman Peter Roche as well as Patrick Gallagher and Robert Gorman from Allen & Unwin, “who are utterly determined that Atlantic remains independent [and] have only ever been steadfast in their support of me and the business".
He said: “I am very grateful for that as we part on the best of terms. I will be staying on for as long as I am needed, so that the next step in Atlantic’s journey is a smooth and successful one.”
Roche said: “We are extremely appreciative of the passion and commitment with which Will has led Atlantic through these nine years. He has attracted excellent staff and high-calibre authors to the list, ensuring Atlantic remains one of the elite independent publishing houses in the country. He goes with our thanks and best wishes.”
Atlantic said its sales are on track this year to have increased over 50% from 2016.
