Jo Spain's Dirty Little Secrets (Quercus) has swept straight into the Audible weekly number one for the week ending 2nd May. The psychological thriller, narrated by Michele Moran, becomes the second fiction title to swipe the top spot in a fortnight, after Tom Bradby's spy title Secret Service (Penguin Audio) sleuthed into the last chart's number one.
Adam Buxton's Ramble Book (HarperCollins) debuted in second place. The comedian's award-winning podcast, and the fact he narrates the title himself, will have helped audio sales to soar.
Initially published in print in 1891, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (Audible) has made the leap into audio download, read by Russell Tovey. It charted in third place. Classics are not uncommon in the Audible rankings—Stephen Fry's narration of Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection (Penguin) has been hanging around the chart since 2017 and Charles Dickens has topped the monthly chart twice, both times with Christmas-themed story collections.
Though it was published in 2018, the subject matter of Diarmaid MacCulloch's Thomas Cromwell (Penguin) has a good 350 years on even Oscar Wilde. It hit fourth place, in an era when interest in Cromwell is at its highest since probably 1540.
Of course, Sally Rooney's Normal People (Whole Story) zipped into the audio chart, the same week its print and e-book edition bounced upwards, thanks to its hugely acclaimed BBC adaptation.
