Writers Tice Cin and Irenosen Okojie have joined And Other Stories as editors.
The independent press said: "It’s very humbling and it fills us with gratitude to think that such incredibly talented people are willing to share their vision and time with And Other Stories."
Publisher Stefan Tobler and senior editor Tara Tobler said: "Tice Cin’s writing was a revelation to us. In Keeping the House [published by And Other Stories], there’s such a joyful abundance of liberty and play, and simultaneously this absolute rightness about how it is composed, mixing in genres like screenplay and poetry into one spot-on novel.
"And all with such heart: from the North London gangsters to the members of a three-generation matriarchal household, every character rings true and compellingly human. She’s a multi-disciplinary artist, and so as well as fiction and poetry, we’re also looking forward to seeing what she brings from other art-form scenes.
"There’s a sense of boundless adventure in Irenosen Okojie’s writing—you never know where in the world you’re going to end up (or if you’ll end up in this world at all), much less how you’re going to get there or what will happen when you arrive. Her fictions are endlessly inventive, surprising, sensual, energetic, flawless on the level of the line, and beautifully fluid, almost anarchic, in their point of view. Much as we’re gutted we never got to publish them ourselves, we’ve sort of been pinching ourselves ever since she said yes to joining us, and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the acquisitions table."
Cin said: "It is a delight to work with the wonderful team at And Other Stories on ushering new books into the world. I published my début with the excellent independent publisher and was moved by the creative agency afforded to me and the thoughtfulness within the process.
"I hope to be able to have an opportunity to include the different global communities I work across in the books I recommend. I’m looking for work that feels electric and radical, from non-fiction to poetry in translation."
Okojie commented: "I have long admired And Other Stories as well as the incredible range of books they champion. Each work is published with such care and specificity but also in conversation with each other, traversing the wild landscapes of fiction with gravitas and verve. I am delighted to become a contributing editor for this radical publishing house."
Cin’s debut, Keeping the House, was published in 2021 and she is preparing a music album to accompany it. She has been recognised by various awards, recently winning the Society of Authors Somerset Maugham Award.
As an interdisciplinary artist, she has performed at venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Roundhouse and Barbican’s Pit Theatre, and has been commissioned by organisations like Cartier, St Paul’s Cathedral and Montblanc.
She was named one of Complex Magazine’s best music journalists of 2021 and 2022 and is also a film-maker, DJ and music producer.
Okojie is a Nigerian British author whose work pushes the boundaries of form, language and ideas. Her novel, Butterfly Fish (Dialogue Books), and short story collections, Speak Gigantular (Jacaranda) and Nudibranch (forthcoming from Dialogue), have won and been nominated for multiple awards and optioned for the screen. Her journalism has been featured by numerous outlets and she was a contributing editor for the White Review.
She co-presented the BBC’s "Turn Up for the Books" podcast, alongside Simon Savidge and Bastille frontman Dan Smith. She has also judged various literary prizes, is a vice chair of the Royal Society of Literature, and received an MBE for services to literature in 2021.
