Retailer AwesomeBooks is giving a copy of every book sold on its site to the National Literary Trust (NLT), which will match them to children and schools who need them.
The campaign is expected to see at least 50,000 books distributed via the NLT's 15 hubs across Britain and other areas of priority in the UK.
AwesomeBooks said it had partnered with the NLT to support its Covid-19 impact appeal and help the literacy recovery of the nation. In addition to buying books, customers can donate money to the appeal directly via the AwesomeBooks website. All donations will contribute to the charity’s ongoing work with schools, children, and families in the UK’s most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas.
The Awesome Book for Book campaign, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, launched today (30th July) and runs until 30th September 2021. AwesomeBooks said it would be working closely with publishers and authors to promote the campaign.
Simon Mackay, head of books at the retailer, commented: “At AwesomeBooks we are committed to improving literacy, working with schools, communities and our global partners to give people the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. We have one goal: to make an impact with every book. We are delighted to partner with the National Literacy Trust to help us do exactly that, and want to thank our customers for their support in reaching these children.”
NLT chief executive Jonathan Douglas added: “We are so grateful to AwesomeBooks for its support—both in the 50,000 books it hopes to distribute through our Hubs network between now and September and in its direct donation points across its retail site.
“After 16 months of turbulence and disruption, there has never been a more important time to support children’s literacy and learning.”
