The Booksellers Association has named Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson (Viking) and Vi Spy: Licence to Chill by Maz Evans (Chicken House) as its books of the month for February.
Fiction Book of the Month Open Water is the story of two young Black British artists, one a dancer, the other a photographer, who fall in love, only to be torn apart by violence and fear. “Exploring what it means to be a person in a world which views you only as a Black body, Open Water is a potent study of race and masculinity, and how it feels to find safety in love, only to lose it,” the blurb explains.
Azumah Nelson said: “Independent bookstores have been integral to my journey. As a reader, I have spent many afternoons browsing, being offered recommendations which have shaped and moulded me. As a writer, I'm thankful for the support they have shown. In both instances, I am grateful for the community and kindness afforded by independent bookstores, big and small.”
Children's Book of the Month Vi Spy: Licence to Chill is the first in a new series from Who Let The Gods Out? author Evans, starring Vi Spy, the young daughter of a super villain and a super spy. While her parents divorce, an evil mastermind plots to take over the world—and only Vi can stop him.
Evans commented: “Over the past few years it has been my privilege to work with so many incredible indies, and see the amazing work they do for schools and communities. It will be my proud honour to fly the flag for our beloved indie bookshops, which remain a vital haven of tranquillity in these crazy times. Thank you so very, very much for the wonder that you bring."
Independent bookshops around the UK and Ireland will be promoting both titles throughout February on social media. The Booksellers Association will be supporting the promotion of the Indie Books of the Month through social media and promotional material.
