Bodley Head will publish MSNBC news anchor Rachel Maddow’s take on “the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry”.
Stuart Williams, publishing director at Bodley Head, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth from Lance Fitzgerald at Penguin Random House US. Blowout will be published by The Bodley Head in early February 2020.
The book was a number one New York Times bestseller for Crown, an imprint of Random House, and remains on the bestseller list. Maddow is the host of the Emmy Award-winning “Rachel Maddow Show” on cable network MSNBC. She holds a degree in public policy from Stanford University and a doctorate in political science from the University of Oxford. She is the author of Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power (Crown Publishing Group, US).
“Blowout is about the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry,” Bodley Head said. “Told with her trademark black humour, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globe, revealing the greed and incompetence of big oil and gas and drawing a surprising conclusion about why the Russian government hacked the 2016 US election. She deftly shows how Russia's rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia's rot into its rivals, its neighbours, the West's most important alliances, and the United States.”
Williams said: “Blowout is ferociously urgent and fantastically entertaining. It has tremendous pace, ambition of reporting, a global reach and historical depth. Rachel Maddow’s voice is combative, expert and blackly funny.”
