The Book Club bar in east London is launching its own monthly literature event to "subvert the traditonal Book Club format".
"After eight years of turning away confused tourists, multi-arts bar The Book Club in Shoreditch is launching its namesake - a monthly radical feminist book club for millennials," organisers said. "The Book Club's monthly event will subvert the traditonal Book Club format, designed for literature-lovers who don't always get the time to read."
Each month will centre on a different theme, the first being magic, astrology and women of the zodiac on March 24th. "Celebrating working class, queer, disabled, poc, fash-smashing feminist writers and writings, participants will be invited to a quick-fire round of two minute slam-style slots for to pitch their favourite feminist writer, writing or character. Throwing a shelf load of books into the pile, we build our own bibliography and finish with a book swap, furrowing into the farthest corners of feminist writings past and present," The Book Club said.
People can turn up on the night to take part in open mic or to sign up for a slot, email anna.literaturelive@gmail.com.
Tickets start from £5 in advance, if punters bring "an old battered copy of your favourite book to swap" rising to £7 without a book and £9 on the door.
