Bookshop.org has generated more than £4m profit for independent bookshops to date, following a strong Christmas trading season.
The news of this milestone comes as the online bookselling platform announces the winners of the Indie Champions Awards, which spotlight individuals and organisations that have supported independent bookshops the most by using bookshop.org throughout 2024.
Nicole Vanderbilt, managing director of bookshop.org, said: "We were especially delighted to have a strong Christmas trading period, which led us to reach the important milestone of £4m in profit generated for independent bookshops in the UK. The Indie Champions are a reminder that we couldn’t do what we do without the support of authors, publishers and organisations that champion our work, our platform and our mission."
Leena Norms, Noreen Masud and Hollie McNish have been recognised as some of the strongest supporters of indie bookshops, alongside Led by Donkeys and Rashmi Sirdeshpande. Moreover, Thames & Hudson excelled in championing indies online last year, while Kim Lund, key account manager at Faber, has been spotlighted among professionals supporting bookshops through the platform.
The winners have taken steps throughout the year to support indies by including regular linking to the platform, incorporating bookshop.org into their campaigns and helping the platform reach new audiences through creative partnerships.
McNish said: "For me, bookshop.org has been the most incredible way to encourage people who cannot get there physically to support these bookshops so easily online. Not only that, but they put together such great ‘playlists’ of books each month that I’m always finding something new to delve into."
Lund added: "It is a joy to work with the team at bookshop.org to promote all things books within the independent sector, and it’s an honour to be chosen for an Indie Champions Award. It has been a particular pleasure to be able to set up the Books That Give promotion to support the sterling work done by Bookbanks to enable access to books in food banks across London and Norfolk."
