Kaliane Bradley, Jeremy Galgut and Katie Hale are among those shortlisted for the V S Pritchett Short Story Prize.
Bradley’s "Doggerland" was described as “at once nebulous, yet utterly convincing” by judge Cynan Jones. Galgut’s “My Son Is Floating Through Spain” meanwhile was praised as “a haunting, evocative, slightly surreal journey through care and responsibility and the grief that comes built in to parenthood” by fellow judge Jenn Ashworth. Cynan called Hale’s “Water Water, or The Deepest Love in England” a “weird, edgy and compelling” read.
Also appearing on the six-strong shortlist are Chris Kohler with “E Is For”, Martin Raymond with “Messengers at Arms” and Ruskin Smith with “Oddjobbing”, which judge Emma Patterson lauded as “effortlessly readable”.
The winner will be announced on Thursday, 30th March and will receive a £1,000 prize and publication in Prospect magazine online and in the RSL Review.
