The winners of the 2022 Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize have been announced, as the indie launches its new anthology.
The prize was created in 2019 as a celebration of the short story form and the resilience of independent booksellers. Funded by the east London indie, the competition is open to all UK residents and seeks to discover, publish and promote new, exciting and diverse voices in fiction.
First prize was awarded to Imogen Fox for her submission “Missy Starling”, while second and third place went to “Tipping” by Giovanna Iozzi and “In Translation” by Emily Gaywood-James.
Also unveiled was the 2022 anthology, which includes 12 stories from longlisted writers, selected from the 775 entries this year. They feature a shaved horse, an Irish commune, runaways, a first sexual encounter, stranded sprats, a celebrity stalker, a European flirtation, a modern-day factory, extreme heat, a rugby-ball-shaped rock, Icelandic foxes and a life in fast-forward.
The winners were announced at the bookshop on Monday 14th November by prize judge and literary agent Chris Wellbelove. “The stories on this longlist showcase the range and excitement of the form – read them for their invention and imagination, and for their abilities to move, surprise and amuse,” he said.
