The winners of the 2024 British Book Design and Production Awards have been announced from a shortlist of 95 books across 18 categories. The awards were held at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on Wednesday 29th January and hosted by designer and illustrator Anita Mangan.
The Folio Society was the outright winner of the awards, finishing at the top of five categories, including Photographic Books for The Planets; Scholarly, Academic and Reference Books for On the Origin of Species; Best Jacket/Cover Design for The Underground Railroad; Best British Book for Nineteen Eighty-Four; and also the prize of Book of the Year for the same title. The judges said it was “a worthy winner” and that “the book conveys astounding finishing, beautifully bound, designed and mesmerising illustrations that capture the feel of the book, with all aspects setting new heights”.
The student category was won by Roisin Scott from the National College of Art and Design, who took home the trophy for her creative book You Have Just Been Diagnosed With ADHD.
The award ceremony began with a speech from Charles Jarrold, the chief executive of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), who stated "that a collaborative spirit materialises because of the existence of books". He added that books are important to "challenge perspectives, increase human engagement and spread knowledge across the world".
After the awards, each guest received a copy of the Book of the Night – which included features on all the shortlist and winners – designed by EN-TE and printed by Halstan on high-quality paper by Fedrigoni, which this year followed the event’s theme of ‘Finish’ with a striking finishing by Diamond Print Services, showcasing the shortlisted and winning books – a collection of the talent of all this year’s finalists.
The BPIF added: "We would like to thank this year’s judges, as well as the supporters and sponsors without whom the Awards wouldn’t be possible – BookMachine, Canon, Diamond Print Services, Fedrigoni, Halstan, Intelligent Finishing Systems, Muller Martini, Oxford Brookes University, Printing Charity, The Bookseller and Winter & Company."
