Nigel Browning will be joining David and Charles in the newly created position of senior commissioning editor for art.
He will be leading on the strategy and commissioning for the company’s growing "practical art" list, starting from November 2023. ’Practical art’ focuses on how-to books, ranging from "technical drawing to whimsical watercolour".
Browning’s early career as a bookseller and in book sales led him to the Quarto Group, where he founded the Quid Publishing imprint. Most recently, he has worked at UniPress Books, a business he co-founded in 2018. His career has seen him develop illustrated books across a range of categories, from science and maths to gardening and nature.
Publishing director Ame Verso said: "This is a tremendously exciting appointment as we continue to grow our independent publishing business. David and Charles has a long history of publishing into practical art and Nigel’s appointment gives us the opportunity to bring greater focus to this exciting category and benefit from the wealth of experience he will bring to the role.”
Browning added: “I’ve always admired the David and Charles imprint and thoroughly enjoyed doing business with them over the years. Ame has a fantastic team with great insight for what their readers need, and I look forward to building on their successful practical arts programme in the years ahead. The opportunity to relocate to Devon and be a part of its thriving, creative community is a huge advantage and working in such a beautiful part of the world will provide much inspiration for great ideas and clarity of thinking.”
David and Charles Ltd was formed in 2019 to complete a management buyout of the David and Charles imprint and publishing assets from former owners, F+W Media. The publisher is the current IPG Specialist Consumer Publisher of the Year.
