Canongate is to publish The Diaries of Alan Rickman, after securing world English-language rights.
Simon Thorogood, editorial director, struck the deal for the actor's diaries, and the book was bought at auction from Natalie Galustian at DHH Literary. North American rights were sold to Sarah Crichton at Holt.
Rickman wrote his diaries with the intention of future publication, and by the time of his death they totalled 27 volumes. They will be edited by Alan Taylor into a single volume.
The synopsis explains: "Hand-written, starting in the early 1990s and kept for the rest of his life, the diaries offer a rare insight into the mind of the man and the artistic, social and political worlds he inhabited. Everything one looks for in a great diarist is here and, true to form, Rickman details the extraordinary and the ordinary with vivacity, perception and heart, all in his own inimitable voice. The diaries paint a rare portrait of a world-class actor, a tireless political activist, an avid traveller and a devoted friend."
Thorogood said: "Which is your favourite Alan Rickman? Jamie in 'Truly Madly Deeply', Hans Gruber in 'Die Hard', on stage as Elyot in 'Private Lives'? Maybe it’s the Sheriff of Nottingham, or perhaps Professor Severus Snape? Or why not all of the above? With the publication of his diaries, fans everywhere are in for a rare treat. Here is the real Alan Rickman: smart, passionate, funny, caring and insightful."
Galustian added: "Alan Rickman is one of our most celebrated and beloved actors, as reflected in the overwhelming positive response from publishers. However, Canongate’s hugely impressive pitch and creative vision for the book was knock-out. On behalf of Alan’s widow Rima and the Rickman estate, we are thrilled to be working with Canongate to bring the diaries to life as Alan intended."
Publication will be in autumn 2022.
