Charco Press is launching its new Charco Classics series with Colombian lawyer and author José Eustasio Rivera’s The Vortex (Duke University Press Books) on the 100th anniversary of the book’s original publication and in a new translation by Daniel Hahn and Victor Meadowcroft.
The aim of the series is to shed a new light onto classic Latin American texts that have not previously been translated into English or did not get "the appropriate attention".
"With Charco Classics our aim is not only to reintroduce some of the most vital Latin American literary works, but to do so in a way that wholly resonates with today’s readers," said Charco’s co-founder and director Samuel McDowell. "Through working with the very best translators and maintaining a focus on bringing underrepresented voices to the fore, we hope to inspire a whole new generation of readers and writers".
Publishing each title in English and Spanish simultaneously, Charco will introduce a new Charco Classic to its list every two years. The Vortex tells the story of young poet Arturo Cova and his lover Alicia as they elope from Bogotá. The title will be published on 3rd December 2024 in paperback and as an e-book.
“As a foundational LatAm [Latin American] literary work, The Vortex is the ideal title to launch our new Classics series,” said Charco’s co-founder and editorial director Carolina Orloff. “Highly regarded by many later authors of the LatAm ‘boom’, including García Marquez and Juan Rulfo, The Vortex remains full of verve and—thanks to a wonderful new translation from Daniel Hahn and Victor Meadowcroft—ready to make waves once more, 100 years after its publication”.
