Illustrated children’s magazine company Studio Anorak is launching an imprint later this month, publishing fiction and non-fiction books that encourage children’s creativity.
Following Studio Anorak’s 15th anniversary celebrations, the magazine will launch Paper Turtle on 20th April. The first publication will be The Book of Laughs, a collection of illustrated jokes, followed by Tummy Fun and Ghoulish Giggles. All the books will be authored by the magazine founder Cathy Olmedillas.
In 2015, Olmedillas set up Anorak, the "happy mag for kids" aged from six to 12, and DOT, a sister publication aimed at children aged under five, after noticing a gap in the market for illustrated magazines featuring games and jokes for children.
She told The Bookseller: "Many people having mentioned in the past that our Happy Mags are more like books, it feels like a natural progression for us to move into the books market, although it does also feels like a giant step.
"We are very grateful to all our readers and stockists who keep supporting us and who are ultimately making this possible – we have a huge respect for the joys that a book brings and hope to keep inspiring children to have fun while reading."
Olmedillas plans to release four books a year, and has ambitions to work with other authors for the fiction books once the imprint is "better established".
For every book sold, the company will be donating £1 to charity, and will change the charity with each new title. Zarach, a foundation that supports children and families living in poverty, has been chosen as the first recipient.
